Twitter Rolls Out Keyword Search for DMs

April 9, 2022

Twitter has unveiled a direct message(DM) search feature that allows users to search their inboxes for specific messages. It is adaptable to both Android and iOS devices.

Brands and businesses that use Twitter for customers support will be pleased to learn that DMs may now be found by searching for keywords. Twitter’s new keyboard search for direct messages(DMs) function allows users to identify specific mentions within a DM.

On Twitter, users can now search their direct messages for specific messages. They can now type particular keywords into the search field to view a list of messages that include specific terms or phrases. Before the latest update, the DM search tool could only sift through people’s names or the titles of group conversations.

Twitter is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, and it regularly updates its app and website with new features. Last month, the business made pinned DMs available to all Android, iOS, and web users. The feature was previously exclusively available to Twitter Blue members. Late last year, Twitter added additional capabilities to its app, including the ability to DM up to 20 people with a tweet.

The social networking site has enhanced its direct message search option by adding filters to let users narrow their searches into four categories: All, People, Groups and Message. The results of the user’s inquiry are displayed in the ‘all’ area, which includes key phrase matches and usernames. Depending on the user’s search parameters, the ‘people’ section presents the most relevant usernames. The ‘groups’ section displays the group conversations that a user has searched for. The keywords match found in each user’s direct messages are displayed in the ‘messages’ section.

To search for direct messages, open the Twitter app and browse the inbox by pressing on the ‘envelope’ icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen (DMs). At the top of the page, a search bar will appear. Begin typing the keyword or phrase you want to look for. Results will appear below the search bar in real-time, displaying messages that include the word or phrase input. Keep in mind that the new search tool does not currently allow you to search through prior DMs. The results provided, according to The Verge, only go back to 2020, not earlier. Currently, the feature appears to be limited to finding messages from the last two years, although this may change in the future.

DM Search Feature

The addition of a true DM search capability, which allows users to search for particular discussions they’ve had with friends and followers on Twitter, is a good development for Twitter. Users can type “chocolate” to see that message without having to read through dozens of irrelevant messages, for example, if they’re trying to remember a chocolate dessert recipe someone posted earlier. It can also come in handy if you’re looking for a direct message sent to a corporation asking for support for a product or service.

People are using Twitter not only for talks with friends and family, but also for communicating with coworkers, clients, and businesses, as it has become an increasingly significant medium of communication. Many of these exchanges happen through DMs, which is why a proper DM search feature has been long overdue. Twitter users will now be able to find crucial DMs in a couple of seconds, just like they would on any other messaging platform, thanks to the new functionality.
